The Small Things That Have Been Saving Me
Lately I've been thinking about all the small things that have quietly been helping me feel better.
I don't mean big changes, life-altering decisions, or moments where everything suddenly clicks. I've started to think the things that save us are much simpler than that: a song, a walk, talking to someone, a bit more sleep, going back to something you used to enjoy, or just having a day where nothing remarkable happened and you felt calm anyway.
And I've learned to value those a lot more.
There are stretches where it feels like you need your whole life sorted before you're allowed to feel okay. Like you need to know what you want to do, where you want to be, what's going to happen with your future, even who you want to become — before you can enjoy the present.
But the truth is, it's been the smallest things bringing me back to myself.
One of them is music.
It's always mattered to me, but recently it's taken up an even bigger place. Putting on a song I love while I do anything at all, finding new music, singing, playing something, or just putting in headphones and disappearing for a while.
Some songs show up exactly when you need them, and without telling you what to do, they make you feel less alone.

Something else that's helped is being around people I trust.
The conversations that start over nothing and somehow run for hours. Laughing until my face hurts. Saying out loud something I'd been carrying for days and feeling it get lighter the second it's out.
Sometimes we think we need someone to hand us the answer, when really we just needed to feel like we weren't alone with it.
Then there are the small plans that don't cost much energy.
Going out for coffee. Getting dressed up with nowhere to be. Going for a walk, seeing somewhere new, making plans with friends, or just having something to look forward to during the week.
Having small things to look forward to is its own reminder that life isn't only made of the big things that haven't happened yet.
Routines have helped too.
I still find them hard to keep, but I've noticed that when my days have even a little structure, I feel different. Sleeping better, moving my body, getting up at a set time, working, having time for myself, doing things I actually like.
I don't need the perfect routine. If anything, I'm learning that a routine shouldn't feel like a checklist you complete to qualify as productive.
Sometimes a routine is just a way of looking after yourself.
Resting without guilt has saved me too.
For a long time I confused being busy with getting somewhere. Now I'm learning that rest is part of the life I want to build.
A quiet day counts.
An afternoon watching a film, cooking something good, lying down with music on, reading a few pages, or doing absolutely nothing — those are part of my life too. They don't have to produce anything to be worth something.
And maybe the thing that's saved me most is remembering I don't need all the answers yet.
There's a lot I still don't know.
I don't know what my life looks like in a few years, what I'll decide, who'll stay, who'll show up, which dreams I'll reach or which ones I'll trade for others.
That used to make me really anxious. These days I try to look at it differently.
Not knowing might just mean there's still plenty left to discover.
So if you've been feeling like you're not moving fast enough, like you should be doing more, or like your life doesn't look the way you pictured it — here's what I'd want you to hear:
you might not need anything enormous to happen before you start feeling better.

Maybe you can start with the small things.
With that song that makes you happy.
With the friend you can always call.
With going back to something you'd stopped doing.
With an early night.
With a walk.
With buying flowers.
With reading again.
With making plans.
With resting.
With laughing.
With letting yourself have a good day without needing to justify it.
Because maybe, looking back, we'll realize it wasn't the big moments that saved us.
It was all the small ones that reminded us there was still so much left to live.
And I think those are the things that have been saving me lately. 🤍
What are the small things that have been saving you? I'd love to read them in the comments — and maybe find some new ways to make our days a little nicer.
See you around. 😊
